Mafeteng is the capital of the Mafeteng District in Lesotho . It is located around 76 km southwest of the capital Maseru and is the westernmost city in the country.

history

Mafeteng was founded in 1874. It was named after the French missionary son Emile Rolland, who was called Lefeta (German: the man who passes by). Literally called Mafeteng: the place of Lefeta's people. In 1986 the city still had 12,598 inhabitants, compared to 20,804 in the 1996 census. For 2005 it was assumed that there were 57,000 inhabitants. In 2016, 39,574 inhabitants were counted. This makes Mafeteng the fourth largest city in Lesotho.

Infrastructure

Today the city is home to many schools and administrative facilities.

In Mafeteng there is the Lesotho Pharmaceutical Corporation (LPC), which manufactures pharmaceuticals and exports them to several countries in the region.

Buses and shared taxis go in many directions from the city .
