Magda Strebl

Magda Strebl (born January 19, 1929 in Vienna ) was the first female director of the Austrian National Library .

Life

Maria Magdalena Kitzberger was born as the daughter of the iron lathe operator and gemstone cutter Paul Kitzberger (1897–1974) and the master dressmaker Helene born. Pointner (1902–1981) born in Vienna. She studied law and received her doctorate from the University of Vienna in 1951. A year later she passed the master's examination for women’s dressmaker. She then completed the judicial year and worked from 1953 to 1956 in the central salary office, where she passed the state accounting examination. In 1957 she moved to the Austrian National Library. In 1959 she passed the service examination for the higher library service there. In 1983 she was appointed General Director of the Austrian National Library.

Magda Strebl is married to the German scholar and art historian Laurenz Strebl (* 1934), who in 1971 moved from the National Library to the department for academic library and information systems of the newly founded Ministry of Science.
