Magdeburg bishops' chronicle
The Magdeburg Bischofschronik (Latin Gesta archiepiscoporum Magdeburgensium , literally deeds of the Magdeburg archbishops ) is a representation of the archbishops of Magdeburg from the 10th to the 16th century in Latin .
Manuscripts
There are copies of the chronicle at the Saxon State and University Library Dresden (SLUB), the Duchess Anna Amalia Library in Weimar, the Marienbibliothek in Halle and at other locations.
Origin and content
The chronicle was started in the late 10th or early 11th century and revised around 1142. It is uncertain whether this happened through the abbot Arnold von Berge, the alleged author of the Annalista Saxo or in his environment. The chronicle was then expanded several times until 1513.
The Magdeburg bishop's chronicle contains information on the archbishops from 983 to 1513 with detailed information on their work.
rating
The chronicle is an important source for depicting the archbishops and their surroundings. As the highest spiritual dignitaries in the east of the empire and as imperial princes, they played a very important role in the church organization and politics of their time. The information about the individual persons is detailed and seems to represent the actual events as far as possible. The descriptions of more distant events, on the other hand, are imprecise and sometimes incorrect.
