Magdeburg thermometer
The Magdeburg thermometer is a thermometer invented by Otto von Guericke , which he attached to his house in Magdeburg in 1660 .
This is basically a gas thermometer , which consists of a gas-filled ball (here air) and a tube filled with a liquid (here alcohol). The expansion of the air depends on the temperature and is transferred to the level of the liquid. In the case of the Magdeburg thermometer, a float floats on the liquid, to which an angel figure is attached by means of a cable, which moves along a scale.
A model is in the Otto von Guericke Museum in the Lukasklause in Magdeburg.
Similar thermometers (actually thermoscopes ), which were built by Galileo in 1597 and by Drebbel in 1603 , worked on the same principle .
