Migrating motor complex

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The migrating motor complex (MMC) is a cyclical, motor activity pattern of the small intestine and stomach . This occurs especially when the digestive system is empty. This complex also gives rise to stomach growling when the stomach is empty.

An MMC in the stomach lasts 90 to 120 minutes and is divided into three phases:

  • In phase 1 there is no mechanical and secretory activity of the stomach.
  • In phase 2 there are weak, uncoordinated contractions.
  • In phase 3, the stomach contracts strongly, compressing the air in the stomach and making noise.
