Magnoald
Magnoald was initially a deacon in Arbon . According to local tradition, he was a companion of Gallus and after his death in 640/650 his successor as head of the monastic community in St. Gallen . The Vita sancti Galli vetustissima attributed a special meaning to him inasmuch as Gallus is said to have sent him to Bobbio after a vision to make inquiries about his former companion and teacher Columban . It was also he who brought Columban's Cambutta (abbot's staff ) and a letter from Columbans Gallus.
