The city was named after the nearby Grand Coulee . Coulee City was officially recognized as a local authority on May 10, 1907.

2010 Census

As of the 2010 census , there were 562 residents, 265 households, and 150 families in Coulee City. The population density was 241.1 per km ². There were 331 housing units at an average density of 142 per km².

The population consisted of 91.3% whites , 2.1% Indians , 0.2% Asians , 1.6% of other "races" and 4.8% of two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 3.4% of the population.

Of the 265 households, 19.2% had children under the age of 18, 44.9% were run by married couples living together , 7.5% by single mothers and 4.2% by single fathers; 43.4% were non-families. 37% of the households were singles and 16.2% were single persons over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.1 and the average family size was 2.72 people.

The median age in the city was 49.1 years. 16.9% of the population were under 18, 7.2% between 18 and 24, 19% between 25 and 44, 33.5% between 45 and 64 and 23.5 65 years or older. 49.6% of the population were men and 50.4% women.

Census 2000

As of the 2000 census , there were 600 residents, 271 households, and 162 families in Coulee City. The population density was 234 per km ². There were 351 housing units at a mean density of 136.9 per km².

The population was 94.83% white , 1% African American , 0.83% Native American , 0.33% Asian , 0.5% Pacific islander , and 0.17% other "Races" and 2.33% from two or more "Races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 2.83% of the population.

Of the 271 households, 25.5% had children under the age of 18, 48.3% were run by married couples living together and 10.3% by single mothers; 39.9% were non-families. 36.2% of the households were singles and 18.5% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.87 people.

The median age in the city was 42 years. 24% of the population were under 18, 7.7% between 18 and 24, 21.7% between 25 and 44, 23.7% between 45 and 64 and 23, 65 years or older. There were 102.7 men for every 100 women, and 99.1 men for every 100 women over the age of 18.

All information on median income relates to the median. The median household income was US $ 25,938 and that of families was US $ 42,500. Men had a median income of US $ 31,375 compared to US $ 17,250 for women. The per capita income was US $ 14,411. About 14.9% of families and 22.1% of the total population lived below the poverty line ; this affected 29.2% of those under 18 and 11.7% of those over 65.
