Othello is a city ( City ) in Adams County in the state of Washington in the United States . At the United States Census 2000 , Othello had 5,847 inhabitants and grew by 25.9% to 7,364 inhabitants by the 2010 census ; at the 2018 census there were already 8,099 people. Othello is often referred to as the city “in the heart” of the Columbia Basin Project . It is located approximately 100 mi (161 km) southwest of Spokane , 180 mi (290 km) east of Seattle, and approximately 25 mi (40.2 km) south of Interstate 90 , at the junction of Washington State Route 17 and Washington State Route 26 .

history

The first white settlers in the area were two brothers, Ben and Sam Hutchinson, who built a cabin on Crab Creek in 1884 . The influx of further settlers began at the beginning of the 20th century; a post office was established in 1904. The post office was named after an office of the same name in Roane County , Tennessee .

The Chicago, Milwaukee, & St. Paul Railroad moved a track through Adams County in 1907. In 1912 a hotel for the railway workers was built on site, which would later become known as the Old Hotel and Art Gallery . The railway company officially parceled out the city as a stop with a water tank to supply the steam locomotives. She took over the name Othello and built a depot there with a wooden engine shed . Since the engine shed burned down in 1919, it was replaced by a stone building that lasted for many years. Companies and settlers followed the development and on May 31, 1910 the city was recognized as a local authority. The railway line currently forms the eastern end of the second electrified district of the "Pacific Extension" of Milwaukee Road, which extends to Tacoma .

The Bureau of Reclamation set up offices in Othello in 1947, which saved the city from decline following the decline in rail transport after World War II. In the early 1950s, the Columbia Basin Project installed irrigation facilities in the Othello area that spurred both agriculture and trade. Before that time, water was only available from Crab Creek and local springs. The water was drawn from the Potholes East Canal between Billy Clapp Lake and Scootenay Reservoir in Franklin County. Once irrigation became available, a raffle was held for lands in Othello. On May 31, 1952, 42 names (out of 7,000 submitted) were drawn to buy the coveted new land.

From 1951 to 1973, the operational Aerospace Defense Command , a major command of the United States Air Force , with the 637 th Radar Squadron , the Othello radar station near the city. In 1958, an ice cream factory was opened in town to provide rail car services. A frozen food packaging facility was set up in the early 1960s and has since become the main industry.

The Sandhill Crane Festival has also been held in Othello since 1998, celebrating the annual arrival of the sandhill cranes in the nearby Columbia National Wildlife Refuge .
