Quincy is a city ( City ) in Grant County in the State of Washington of the United States . As of the 2010 United States Census , Quincy had 6,750 residents. The city's motto is "Where Agriculture Meets Technology - Opportunities Unlimited" (German for example, "Where Agriculture Meets Technology - Unlimited Opportunities").

history

Geological history

One outlet of the Missoula floods was near Trinidad, near Quincy. Even from Montana native boulders can be found nearby. There are numerous table mountain -like cliffs ("rim rocks") in the entire area .

Great Northern Railway

Quincy was founded in 1892 when the Great Northern Railway was being built as a camp for railway builders; it was officially recognized as a city on March 27, 1907. It is named after Quincy (Illinois) .

Grand Coulee Dam

When the water dammed up by the Grand Coulee Dam reached the city in 1952 , it changed.

2010 Census

As of the 2010 census , Quincy had 6,750 residents, 1,915 households, and 1,541 families. The population density was 525.4 per km ². There were 2,020 housing units at an average density of 157.3 per km².

The population was 54.9% white , 0.4% African American , 0.9% Indian , 0.7% Asian , 0.2% Pacific islanders , 40.6% from other "races" and 2.4% from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 74.3% of the population.

Of the 1915 households, 55.2% had children under the age of 18, 55.2% were run by married couples living together , 16.2% by single mothers and 9% by single fathers; 19.5% were non-families. 15.1% of the households were singles and 6.7% were single persons over 65 years of age. The average household size was 3.51 and the average family size was 3.87 people.

The median age in the city was 26.2 years. 36.6% of the population were under 18, 11.5% between 18 and 24, 26.9% between 25 and 44, 16.6% between 45 and 64 and 8.3 65 years or older. 50.7% of the population were men and 49.3% women.

Census 2000

As of the 2000 census , Quincy had 5,044 residents, 1,470 households, and 1,176 families. The population density was 869.4 per km ². There were 1,552 housing units at an average density of 267.5 per km².

The population consisted of 75.1% White , 12.3% African American , 0.9% Indian , 3.6% Asian , 0.1% Pacific Islander , 5.5% from other "races" and 2.4% from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 12.5% ​​of the population.

Of the 1470 households, 50.1% had children under the age of 18, 62% were run by married couples living together, and 11.8% by single mothers; 20% were non-families. 17.9% of the households were singles and 8.5% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 3.38 and the average family size was 3.79 people.

The median age in the city was 27 years. 36% of the population were under 18, 10.6% between 18 and 24, 28.3% between 25 and 44, 16.1% between 45 and 64 and 9 65 years or older. There were 106.3 men for every 100 women and 104.7 men for every 100 women over the age of 18.

Agriculture

Quincy's economic basis for a long time was agriculture, which was supported by irrigation from Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake . The main crops are potatoes, wheat and timothy grass .

Orchards and vineyards are also found in Quincy. Washington State is a major apple supplier.

Technology companies like Microsoft , Yahoo! , Dell and Intuit have built large data centers in the Quincy area since 2007 . Microsoft's Columbia Data Center , the construction of which began in 2006 and has been expanded several times, is considered the world's largest data center. The centers, attracted to the area by the abundant and cheap hydropower , have been heavily criticized for shirking fines from the Grant County Public Utility District for the electrical power overload and air pollution from the diesel-powered emergency generators.

Washington state tax incentives are in place for the data centers to support the city's economic development. Two additional substations were built to meet the expected needs of current and future companies.

Tourism and leisure

Fishing, hiking, and bird watching are available at nearby Quincy Lake, a holdover from the temporary Pleistocene lakes created by floods on glacial Lake Missoula .

The city of Quincy is located in the western part of east Washington , also known as central Washington; Numerous leisure activities are possible in both winter and summer, including boating and water skiing, hunting, fishing, skiing and attending concerts. The Gorge Amphitheater , an open-air theater on the Columbia River, draws diverse people to the Quincy Valley. Although George is the closest town to the Gorge Amphitheater , Quincy has better conditions like motels and a grocery store. Quincy has seen an increase in population during the concerts held in the amphitheater. Quincy also has a Tacos mi Pueblo , one of the most sought-after Mexican restaurants in the area.

The semi-arid climate ensures dryness for weeks or months in summer. This means that local recreation by the water, such as at the Crescent Bar, is of great importance. Quincy is the closest town to the Crescent Bar.

Quincy has several parks, including a water amusement park with a water slide made up of two half-tubes, as well as heated swimming pools and special areas for children. The park has an extensive baseball field, playground, picnic area, and a small area for skaters.

The Farmer-Consumer Awareness Day is held in Quincy on the second Saturday in September . A month in advance, the streets leading to the city are decorated with signs showing local agricultural products and products made from them. On the day of the event, floats designed by local schools and farmers parade through the city. Free agricultural and geological tours are offered, plus product sales, a tractor train, a farm-to-market fun race, and many other activities.

Quincy celebrated its centenary in 2007.

The Quincy High School won the 1998 2A Baseball Championship of Washington and the 2014 1A Football Championship of Washington. In 2005 the boys team finished second in basketball in Washington. The Dru Gimlin sketball tournament is held in Quincy every year .

controversy

The book Fateful Harvest by Duff Wilson, a reporter for the Seattle Times , describes Quincy and the practice of companies dumping toxic waste on agricultural land by re-declaring the waste and selling it as fertilizer .
