The Magnus Carlsen Invitational was an online rapid chess tournament that ran from April 18 to May 3, 2020. In addition to the reigning world chess champion Magnus Carlsen , who organized the tournament in cooperation with the chess platform Chess24.com , seven other top players took part. The tournament received media attention as one of the few sporting events during the COVID-19 pandemic . Carlsen won the tournament, defeating Hikaru Nakamura in the final . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, sports operations around the world largely came to a standstill; in chess, the Yekaterinburg 2020 candidates' tournament was last interrupted on March 26th. Then Magnus Carlsen organized an invitation tournament with the platform Chess24.com , in which he has a financial stake.

For the tournament prize money of 250,000 of Chess24.com was dollars awarded 70,000 dollars of which was the winner. The thinking time was 15 minutes plus 10 seconds per move. Draw offers before move 40 were not allowed. The tournament was initially held in the preliminary round (April 18 to April 30) as a round-robin tournament, each playing four games against each other. The winner of a four-game duel received three points, the loser no point. In the event of a tie, an Armageddon game was played. The winner of this game got two points, the loser one point. Two encounters were held per day, on the last day all four encounters take place in parallel.

After the preliminary round, the best four players qualified for the knockout round. The best player in the preliminary round met the fourth-placed player in the semi-finals (May 1 and May 2), while the second competed against the third. Again four games were played per encounter. If there was a tie, a tie-break in blitz chess followed . Two games were played with five minutes to think about and a three second surcharge per move. In the event of a tie, two more blitz games will be scheduled. If no decision had been made after that, an Armageddon game would have been played. The winners of the semi-finals played the overall winner in the same mode on May 3rd.
