Magnus Jónsson, Earl of Caithness

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Magnus Jónsson, Earl of Caithness and Earl of Orkney (also Magnus V, Earl of Caithness ; also Jarl of Orkney ) († around 1321) was a Norwegian - Scottish nobleman.

Magnus was a son of Jón Magnússon, Earl of Caithness . He was probably still a minor when he became the heir to his father's possessions and titles after his father's death before 1312. That is probably why he did not take part in the battles of the Scottish War of Independence. As Earl of Caithness he was subject to the Scottish King, as Jarl or Earl of Orkney , the Norwegian King was his overlord. Little is known about his life. Apparently he did not take part in the fighting of the Scottish War of Independence . Only in April 1320 did he seal the Declaration of Arbroath together with numerous other Scottish barons .

He married a Katherine , although this name is not known. With her he had at least one son who was still a minor when he died. The Scottish King then appointed Henry Sinclair as administrator of Caithness in 1321 . The son and heir of Magnus died around 1330 before he came of age and could take over his inheritance. Then Caithness and Orkney fell to Malise, 8th Earl of Strathearn , the great-grandson of a sister of Magnus grandfather Magnus Gilbertson, Earl of Caithness .
