Magnus Plessen
Magnus Plessen (* 1967 in Hamburg ) is a German artist who lives and works in Berlin .
Life
Magnus Plessen worked as a photographer and cameraman, and as a painter since the 2000s.
Since 2014 he has been working on the 1914 series , which deals with happiness and impermanence based on the disabled of the First World War . The starting point is the book War in War by the German pacifist Ernst Friedrich from 1924. Since April 2019, the artist has been teaching a class at the Karlsruhe Art Academy .
Design language
Plessen's works “oscillate between figuration and abstraction and are characterized by their very own formal language”. His paintings combine free-floating body fragments such as heads, arms, legs and hands with everyday objects. The early pictures from the 1914 series attempted to undermine traditional forms of representation; the new works "sharpen this approach further in the dissolution of the figure-ground relationship". "The painting surface and the forms appearing on it fall radically into one - duplicated faces, limbs, everyday objects do not find a specially designated and spatially defined place on the picture surfaces, but rather appear as if they were inlaid like inlays in the picture carrier".
