List of central banks

The Hungarian National Bank (Hungarian Magyar Nemzeti Bank ) is the central bank of Hungary. The main goal of the bank is to guarantee price stability . The bank is also responsible for issuing the national currency, the Hungarian forint , by controlling the circulation of cash, setting the key interest rate, publishing official exchange rates, and influencing the national currency and gold reserves . The Magyar Nemzeti Bank thus controls the monetary policy of their country. It is a member of the European System of Central Banks .

The MNB is sticking to a medium-term inflation target of around 3%. This target is somewhat higher than the generally accepted inflation level in Europe. The reason for this is that the Hungarian economy is to be given the opportunity to catch up with the European level with its prices.

The President of the Central Bank is appointed by the Hungarian President on the proposal of the Prime Minister. His term of office is six years. The most important decision-making body of the Hungarian central bank is the monetary council. The MNB headquarters, designed by architect Ignác Alpár in 1905, is located in downtown Budapest on Szabadság tér , right next to the US embassy .

In the Hungarian law, the role of the MNB is defined as follows:

“The primary goal of MNB should be to achieve and maintain price stability. Without affecting the achievement of the first goal, the MNB should support the government's economic policy by using the monetary policy instruments available to it. "
