MAHFEL was an information sheet first published on October 1, 1990 in Berlin and Dresden by the Circle of Friends for the Peoples of West and Central Asia and the Circle of Friends of Afghanistan.

The Persian word Mahfel is derived from the same tribe as the Arabic Hafla (celebration, party) and could be understood in the figurative (not in the literal) sense as an invitation to this circle of friends or as a place (meeting point) of the same.

With the support of the INKOTA network , the circles of friends and the Mahfel Association have been publishing news from (non-Arab) West and Central Asia (Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kurdistan, East Turkestan, Pakistan ) in the form of a press review since 1991 , Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan), mixed with own articles and information. MAHFEL initially appeared monthly (at its peak in 1995 with a circulation of 250 subscribed copies), from 1995 onwards the publication period was extended to two months due to financial difficulties.

Responsible in terms of press law was the left-wing journalist Thomas Ruttig from Berlin, and Dr. Erhard Bauer, Gudrun Maier (Research Center of the State Museum for Ethnology Dresden) and the Iranian Studies Professor Lutz Rzehak (Humboldt University Berlin). Since the Infoblatt and Freundeskreis were financed solely from membership fees, MAHFEL was a grant business and was finally abandoned in 1996. Individual copies are archived in Islamic or regional science departments of some universities.
