Mahi (also: Maxi , Maxi-Gbe , Gbe, Maxi ) is the language of the Mahi .
The mahi live mainly in Benin and Togo . The total number of speakers is estimated at around 91,300. Mahi is spoken by about 66,000 (Johnson) people in Benin and about 25,300 in Togo (1991).
In Benin, the Mahi speakers live mainly in the south of the country in the Collines department in the sub-prefectures Dassa-Zoume, Savalou, Bante, Glazoue and Ouessi. In Togo, they live mainly in some linguistically isolated communities in the southern part of the Centrale region and in the north-western part of the Plateaux region and in the south of Atakpamé , the capital of the Plateaux region.
Mahi is well understood by the speakers of the Fon . It belongs to the Kwa languages .
