The Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium is a cricket stadium in Hambantota , Sri Lanka and after the current President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed the country. It was built for the 2011 World Cricket Championship and currently has a capacity of 35,000, which is to be expanded to 60,000.
Infrastructure
The stadium, which is being expanded for ICC World Twenty20 in 2012 , was built starting in 2009 for an estimated $ 9 million. It was supposed to function as part of a new business and sports center, which was made clear with the application for the Commonwealth Games 2018 . However, the surrounding infrastructure is currently only sparse. Since the cost of building the stadiums for the World Cup was too much for the Sri Lanka Cricket Association , the stadiums were handed over to the military in November 2011. Since then, the Sri Lankan Army has owned the stadium. The two ends are called Thanamalwila End and Sooriyawewa End.
International cricket
The Sri Lankan national cricket team played their first international game on February 20, 2011 at this stadium. At the World Cup 2011, two preliminary round games took place here and at the ICC World Twenty20 2012 three preliminary round games were played here. Since then, on some tours in Sri Lanka, mostly ODIs have taken place here.
