Hambantota ( sin. හම්බන්තොට; tam. அம்பாந்தோட்டை) is a town in the Southern Province in Sri Lanka . It is the headquarters of the Hambantota district and had 11,213 inhabitants at the census.

history

The city suffered major damage in the tsunami that followed the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake . In the aftermath, with the help of Chinese funds and under the influence of Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapaksa , who was born in the region, numerous infrastructure projects were initiated. In 2013 the summit of the Commonwealth of Nations took place in the city .

Infrastructure

An important infrastructure project was a new port, which was largely financed by China as part of the One Belt, One Road strategy. Likewise, Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport was built with Chinese loan support. For Sri Lanka, the enormous investments in the airport and the deep-water port have not paid off so far - neither have come close to meeting the economic expectations placed in them, but their operations have remained highly deficit. After Sri Lanka got into financial problems and a debt of six billion US dollars was incurred in Chinese infrastructure investments, 70 percent of the shares in the port and a nearby industrial area were leased for 99 years by the Chinese state-owned company China Merchants Port Holdings on July 29, 2017 . The Indian government observed these Chinese activities with suspicion and the state-owned Airports Authority of India acquired 70 percent of the shares in the airport for a period of 40 years in July 2016 - possibly mainly to prevent a Chinese takeover of the airport.

Sports

Another infrastructure project was built with Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, a cricket stadium for international games. Among other things, games of the cricket world championship 2011 and the ICC World Twenty20 2012 took place there. Furthermore, the city applied to host the Commonwealth Games 2018, but lost in the selection against the Australian Gold Coast . In 2011, the first South Asian beach games took place here.
