The largest telescope is the AZT-22 reflector telescope with a diameter of 1.5 meters.

location

The Maidanak Observatory is located in the southwest of the country of Uzbekistan on Mount Maydanak.

Advantages of the location for building an observatory

In addition to the altitude of the place, there are other advantages of the place. There are seldom high wind speeds in the region that could affect the measurements. In addition, the place is geographically about halfway between the important astronomical facilities on Hawaii and the Canary Islands .

history

The buildings of the observatory

In the 1960s, the Ulug'bek Astronomical Institute of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences was looking for a suitable site for a large telescope. After ten years of searching, Maydanak Mountain was found to be the most suitable location for such a project. In the 1980s, various groups of researchers carried out tests to check the suitability of the site. in 1996 the construction, procurement and installation of the instruments began.

use

Signals from hundreds of different celestial bodies are captured every night by the Maidanak Observatory . In this way, the observatory helps find new planets and stars .

Cooperations

The Maidanak Observatory has a collaboration with a consortium of universities in South Korea . In addition, the facility has 20,007 member of the International Program for the documentation of global warming . As part of this initiative, a special telescopic robot was installed on the premises of the observatory.
