The Maison Dieu Chapel is a ruined church in the Scottish town of Brechin in the Council Area Angus . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, the ruin is classified as a Scheduled Monument .

history

In 1256 William de Brechin founded the Maison Dieu in Brechin. It was a hospital and poor house. Although a secondary school was attached in 1636 and Maison Dieu served the school principal as a residence, it was described as a ruin at the turn of the century. Maison Dieu was then used as a barn and fell victim to a fire in 1825. The Maison Dieu Chapel was attached to the poor house, fragments of which are still preserved today. In 1900 John Honeyman restored the preserved fragment.

The Maison Dieu Chapel is located on Maisondieu Lane in the historic center of Brechin. Today only a twelve meter long fragment of the south facade along the street remains of the chapel. A fragment of the east facade was integrated into the masonry of the adjacent building and is explicitly excluded from the preservation order. The masonry of the early Gothic chapel is made of quarry stone . The wall fragment includes a pointed arch portal with a profiled archivolt . Three lancet windows are set in higher . Fragments of the surround of a fourth lancet window are visible. A damaged piscina has been preserved on the inside .
