Maison des jeunes et de la culture

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Maisons des jeunes et de la culture (abbreviation: MJC; German: Houses of Youth and Culture) form a special association structure in France . There are similar facilities in Belgium and Quebec (Canada) . In the Soviet Union and its former satellite states, these types of facilities were called the "Palace of Pioneers" and were mainly subject to the official doctrine of the Communist Party .

history

In France, the "FFMJC" (Fédération Française des Maisons des Jeunes et de la Culture) was founded in 1948 on the initiative of André Philip ; it emerged from the "Républiques des jeunes", which in turn was a department in the 1944 Resistance . The "Républiques des jeunes" build on the first structures put in place by the Vichy government during the war, referring to the ideas of Léo Lagrange during the Popular Front .

The MJC aim at the individual responsibility and self-determination of the citizens ( Citoyens ). You have the ability to bundle the citizens' movements and develop new, innovative ideas. They want to bring youth and culture together in a popular education perspective.

These structures, which are often based on tried and tested local practices and resources, occur mainly in metropolitan France as well as in the DOM and some francophone countries. In France they are subordinate to the Ministère de la Jeunesse et des Sports .

There are two national associations that each unite a group of the French MJC: the Confédération des maisons des jeunes et de la culture de France (CMJCF) and the Fédération française des maisons des jeunes et de la culture (FFMJC) .

Christian Maurel divides the history of the MJC into 4 periods:

  • The founding period of the MJC: 1907–1947 and 948–1958
  • Origin, maturation and development: 1959–1983
  • Change in relations with the municipalities: 1984–2008
  • "MJC starts into the future": 2008 ...
