Maizena Works Barby

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Maizena-Werke Barby (also: VEB Maisan-Werke Barby ) were a production site of Maizena in Barby .

History / description

The Maizena works were built from 1922 to 1924 by the US Corn Products Company as an investor. The Maizena works in Barby were considered the first corn starch factory in Europe. In 1946, the Maizena works were dismantled, although they were American owned. In 1969 the company was renamed VEB Maisan-Werke Barby . In August 1990, the company went down in history as the first GDR company to file for bankruptcy. After the shutdown in 1992/1993, the plants were in ruins or were demolished. In 1993, the Cerestar company ( taken over by Cargill in 2002) built a new wheat starch plant next to the closed plant ; Cargill is thus continuing the location.

Description / construction

Among other things, the plant consisted of large concrete silos in which the maize was stored. It was delivered by ship or train on the east side of the company. There was a powerful elevator, which was very modern for the 1920s, with the help of which the maize could be continuously unloaded from the railway wagon or barge and transported to great heights. The structural design was innovative for the time. Reinforced concrete skeletons were cast, which were then lined with bricks like half-timbered houses, which made it possible to increase the load-bearing capacity of the buildings. The silo was made of concrete.
