Macedonian tomb 2

The Macedonian grave 2 ( Greek Μακεδονικός Τάφος Β΄ ) of Argilos is located about 100 m east of Sykia about 50 m north of the Ethniki Odos 2 . It is smaller but better preserved than the Macedonian Tomb 1 further west and was found in the 3rd century BC. Built in BC. It is not known whether the tomb belonged to the Argilos located about 1 km to the west or to the Amphipolis about 3 km to the northeast , which in the 4th century had spread to the west bank of the Strymon .

description

Entrance to the tomb
Schematic representation of the grave

The entrance to the tomb was originally reached via a 5 m long and 2 m wide dromos , of which nothing can be seen today. Five friezes are shown above the entrance . Behind the entrance one enters a very small antechamber before reaching the main chamber. Both have a vaulted ceiling. Under the floor of the main chamber a rectangular, brick-built pit was found, which was used for the burial of the deceased. The excavation of the grave took place in 1976 under the direction of the archaeologist Dimitrios Lazaridis. In contrast to grave 1, neither the marble doors that closed the grave chamber nor a bier were found. Among the few grave goods found were coins from Cassander (305-297 BC) and Antigonus II Gonatas (277-239 BC).
