Malachius rubidus is a beetle from the subfamily of thehairpin beetle (Malachiinae) within the family Melyridae . A synonym is Malachius carnifex Erichson , 1840.
features
The slender beetles have a body length of 5.5–6 mm. The head, antennae and legs are black. The black pronotum is colored red at the front corners. The red elytra are variable in color. In a variation, a black or green-blue band runs along the wing-cover seam, which extends from the base over a length of two-thirds of the wing-cover. The width of the tape is variable.
distribution
Malachius rubidus is a Palearctic species. It occurs in Central, Southern, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. In the east, the occurrence extends to Lithuania and Slovakia. The beetles are usually only found individually. The species is not considered common.
Way of life
The adult beetles are usually seen between late April and mid-June. The typical habitat of the beetle species is sunny forest edges and meadows as well as grain fields. The beetles are often found on ears of grain, on members of the genus of the cornices ( Scirpus ) and on milkweed ( Euphorbia ).
