Malacosoma is a genus of butterflies in the family of the mother hen (Lasiocampidae).

Characteristics of the genus

The moths of the genus are mostly brown to brownish yellow and of small to medium size. The wings are rather short and broad. The antennae of the males are combed, those of the females less. The legs of the moth are hairy long. The long caterpillars are relatively short and smoothly hairy. The eggs overwinter and are deposited in the ring. The pupae are in a web and are rather short and blunt at the rear end.
