The Malaysia Airlines flight 2133 (Flight number: MH2133 ) was a line of domestic flight Malaysia Airlines from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau . On September 15, 1995, a serious accident with a Fokker 50 occurred on this flight near the destination airport , in which 34 people were killed. It was the first total loss of a Fokker 50 and the first fatal incident with a machine of this type.

The aircraft concerned was a Fokker 50 with serial number 20174 , which was built at the Fokker plant at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and which made its maiden flight on January 8, 1990. The machine was first put into operation for the test flight with the Dutch aircraft registration PH-EXA , on March 24, 1990 it was then delivered to Malaysia Airlines. The twin-engine short-range aircraft was equipped with two turboprop engines of the type Pratt & Whitney Canada PW125B equipped.

The flight from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau airport had begun 49 passengers. There was a crew of four on board, consisting of a flight captain, a first officer and two flight attendants.

On the approach to Tawau, the pilots were given clearance to land on runway 17. The machine only disengaged 500 meters before the end of the 2200 meter long runway. While trying to take off, the plane crashed into an informal settlement behind the airport.
root cause
According to the investigation report, the accident was known to have been caused by poor decisions made by the pilot during the flight and failure to follow standard procedures. The report also noted that the first officer did not alert the master to unsafe maneuvers or take control of the aircraft. Another factor was the air traffic controller's failure to provide reliable air traffic services in controlled airspace.
