the accident

On the approach to Tawau, the pilots were given clearance to land on runway 17. The machine only disengaged 500 meters before the end of the 2200 meter long runway. While trying to take off, the plane crashed into an informal settlement behind the airport.

root cause

According to the investigation report, the accident was known to have been caused by poor decisions made by the pilot during the flight and failure to follow standard procedures. The report also noted that the first officer did not alert the master to unsafe maneuvers or take control of the aircraft. Another factor was the air traffic controller's failure to provide reliable air traffic services in controlled airspace.

context

On March 20, 1995, at the same airport, a Cessna 208 caravan also crashed into an informal settlement at the airport after a failed start.
