Malchus (Carthaginian)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Malchus was a Carthaginian military leader and politician in the 6th century BC. Chr.

Malchus was born a few years or decades after 580/76 BC. Sent to Sicily as Carthaginian commander , probably because Phoenician , possibly also Elymic cities in western Sicily asked for help because of the Greek expansion.

It is not certain whether Carthaginian troops were stationed in Sicily before. It is possible that Malchus took the city of Selinus during the fighting . What is certain, however, is that Malchus was generally successful in Sicily. In the middle of the 6th century he was sent to Sardinia as commander , presumably to support the local Phoenicians against the Sardinians . After a defeat, he and his army were banished from the Carthaginian people's assembly. Thereupon Malchus besieged Carthage with the remaining troops and conquered it. Ten senators who had approved his banishment were executed. However, he was brought to court and executed , possibly by Mago among others , for striving for royal rule.
