Malcolm Bell

Malcolm Bell , III (* 1941 ) is an American classical archaeologist .

Bell graduated from Princeton University , where he received his AB in 1963 and his PhD in 1972. He taught until his retirement as Professor of Classical Archeology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville . Since 1980 he has directed the American excavations in Morgantina in Sicily .

Bell was Andrew W. Mellon Professor at the National Gallery of Art's Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts and taught courses at the American Academy's School of Classical Studies in Rome . He advised the Italian government on issues relating to the illegal trade in antiquities and the repatriation of Italian art treasures from American collections.

For 2016 he was awarded the Gold Medal by the Archaeological Institute of America .
