The plot of the episode The traffic jam follows on from the last episode of the first season. On their return from their trip to the water park, Malcolm, Reese, Lois, and Hal get stuck in the scorching heat in a traffic jam caused by an accident.
While Lois tries to clear the traffic jam and comes into conflict with the clearance workers and the security forces, Reese takes on an ice cream seller who does not want to sell anyone ice cream. Hal comes to the conclusion that he only escaped the accident by a happy coincidence, and as a result he gets into a life crisis. Malcolm gets to know the girl of his dreams only to realize she lives in Canada and he will likely never see her again. Meanwhile, Dewey, who ran away from home after the death of his babysitter in the previous episode, is on a vehicle-to-vehicle odyssey until he gets home. And Francis is trying to set a record for eating candy at the military academy. |

Intro Malcolm and Reese always outdo each other at the refrigerator when they eat or drink expired food. In the end, Malcolm says this is one of their games that no one can win. Main plot Meanwhile, Hal feels completely bothered by a traffic hooligan as he drives through the family street at unusually high speeds. Therefore Hal now wants to confront him and convene his neighborhood, which is not a success, because they see Hal and his family as a much bigger problem. After staying up all night to catch the traffic hooligan, he builds a speed bump out of cement, but it doesn't stop him either. When Lois catches the offender throwing garbage on the street, she gets mad at him too. Together, the two of them follow him to his home and steal his car, which they drive far out of town. Intro
While the three brothers are on their way to a house together, Malcolm tells the audience some of the reasons why weekends are great; the best, however, is his neighbor. Shortly in front of the house they put on Halloween disguises and ring the doorbell, whereupon their neighbor gives them sweets. Intro
Malcolm and Reese are playing baseball in the living room of the house and want to end the game after something breaks with their ball. Malcolm then says he has won the game, but Reese does not want to be satisfied with that, which is why the two are repeating the game. After something breaks again, you want to quit the game one more time, but then repeat it again. Main plot At the same time, Commander Spangler is allegedly being visited by his mother at the military academy (which is not shown, however) and does not want to have any stress with his cadets for a weekend. Francis, meanwhile, wants to throw a party at the academy. So he and his friends invite neighboring girls and organize the party with them. But this degenerates into a chaos that neither Francis nor his comrades can end. To end the hustle and bustle, the cadets finally turn to their commanding officer, Spangler. Intro
Hal wakes up in bed at night and tells Lois that he has forgotten something, but doesn't know what, and falls asleep again. When they get up the next morning, Dewey is asleep against the wall. Hal wakes him up and tells him he has learned his lesson. Main story At the same time, Hal, Reese and Malcolm get lost in a military compound where bombs are detonated for test purposes. One after the other, they must escape multiple ignitions on the site and get to safety. In the end, however, they are caught and interrogated by a member of the military, but in the end they are released. Although the family thinks Francis is in the military academy, Francis skips school and spends his weekend at his parents' house. While there, Craig enters the house with his key. Intro
Hal and Lois want to end their TV evening and go to bed, but Hal sits there for a while and zaps on a channel that is playing Mexican soap operas. Because Reese loses in a wrestling match against a girl, he questions his role as a schoolyard bully and decides to become peaceful. While the gifted are initially happy that they are no longer pestered by Reese, it turns out that without him as the top school thug they become the target of loads of bullys who are moving up. Malcolm also learns that many students were offended by his sarcastic comments, and since Reese no longer protects him, they are now taking revenge on him. General chaos breaks out at the school, and the gifted beg Reese to resume his role as a bully and keep the students under control.
Francis' birthday is imminent at the military academy. Because he is afraid of the humiliating birthday rites of the cadets, he calls Lois to ask for money for the trip home that day. Instead, they send him biscuits and a congratulatory balloon, thus making his comrades aware of his birthday. |

Francis visits from the military academy. He buys two wrestling tickets and determines that he will attend the event with whoever loves him most. In order to determine this, he lets Malcolm and Reese perform all sorts of tasks for him, and at the same time the two try to obtain house arrest for their opponent. When Francis goes to wrestling with a girl anyway, his brothers take revenge on him.
Dewey has currently been assigned the task of feeding Craig's cat while he is away. When she runs away, he calls his father Hal to help. However, Hal's plans favor a break-in that clears Craig's apartment. When Lois comes to help, the search for the cat culminates in the whole apartment burning out. |

Malcolm's family took Craig in after Hal, Lois, and Dewey caused the fire in his apartment. He proves to be an extremely troublesome roommate who strains the nerves of all family members.
Malcolm, Reese and Dewey find a minibike and restore it, but Lois forbids them to ride it. When Reese secretly does it, he breaks his leg. In order to hide his crime, he lies behind Craig's car as it drives off the front of the house, and pretends that Craig has run over his leg. Craig moves out, contrite about his supposed lapse. Hal visits Francis at the military academy for a father-son weekend. At first he is very disappointed that Francis is the only cadet who has no awards and is only causing trouble. However, when he learns that Francis only rebels against the academy management when he wants to take action against injustices, he is still proud of his son. |

Malcolm, Reese, Dewey and Malcolm's boyfriend Stevie claim to their parents that they sleep in the other parents' house, but in fact they go to the fair at night with the bus. Shortly after they get there, the fair ends and they are locked in the grounds. A drunk security guard chases the four and takes Stevie prisoner. He is released again through the intervention of the sideshow actors.
Meanwhile, Hal and Lois try to spend an intimate evening at home, but when Stevie's worried parents appear, they go looking for the children together. They let Francis from the military academy steer them over the phone to all the places where the four boys could be stuck until they meet them at the fair. As a punishment, the boys have to go home on foot. |

Because Malcolm is home late, Lois puts him under house arrest. Meanwhile, Hal and Dewey drive to the garbage dump to dispose of a couch, but on the way it falls from the roof unnoticed and remains on the rails. This derails a freight train carrying chemicals, whereupon the neighborhood is evacuated and all residents are housed in a gym. Hal says he was responsible for the accident and feels guilty.
In the emergency shelter, Lois maintains house arrest and does not let Malcolm leave his bunk. While Reese runs a black market trade in urgently needed goods, Dewey tells people that his parents were killed in a chemical accident in order to swindle gifts and gifts. Hal hears of this, and without realizing that the alleged orphan is his son Dewey, he begins to collect money for him among the evacuees. Malcolm finally tries to rebel against the arrest, but then Lois demonstrates that she could spank his ass at any time if she wanted. As a result, Dewey is the son of Hal. Hal is accused of fraud, and Reese's usury is also exposed. When Dewey then frankly tells the crowd that the train derailed because of their couch, they are banished to a tiny area outside the gym. DVD release
The second season of Malcolm in the Middle is expected to be released in the UK in mid-2012 . A release in the USA had already been announced for autumn 2003 , but failed due to the high costs for the music rights.
