Kevin James Langley (born May 24, 1964 in St Helens ) is a retired English football player . The defensive midfielder was active for Wigan Athletic in the 1980s and 1990s and has played the most competitive and league games within the club. His biggest success in the 1986/87 season, when he with Everton , the English championship won.

Athletic career

Langley first worked as a painter and varnisher when he wrote to Wigan Athletic asking for trial training. The there responsible coach Ian McNeill offered him a training contract and under his successor Larry Lloyd Langley denied in September 1981 against Northampton Town his league debut in the fourth division. By the end of the subsequent 1982/83 season, the first season of the "Latics" in the third division, he gradually gained a regular place as a defensive midfielder. He missed only a few games in the following three years until the end of the 1985/86 season and in addition to a narrow non-promotion to the Second Division , he won the Football League Trophy in 1985 via a 3-1 final win against Brentford FC . For the transfer fee of 120,000 pounds, he then left the club in the summer of 1986 in the direction of the first division club Everton , where his teammate Warren Aspinall had recently moved .

Since Peter Reid and Paul Bracewell , who were set in the midfield center of Everton FC , were injured at the beginning of the 1986/87 season, he was permanently used earlier than expected. This included his appearance in the Charity Shield game against Liverpool (1: 1) and 16 first division games until the end of November 1986, in which he also scored two goals against Sheffield Wednesday (2: 2) and Oxford United (3: 1) reach. But when the traditional forces returned to the team, he could not make any further contribution to winning the English championship in 1987 , although he had qualified for an official medal through his early games. Just nine months after arriving in Everton, he moved on towards top division rivals Manchester City . There he played nine games in the current season, but then after relegation to the second division did not get a chance at all. Instead, the "Citizens" loaned him briefly to the third division Chester City in the following season 1987/88 , before moving to the second division Birmingham City coached by Gerry Pendry in March 1988 .

In Birmingham they expected a lot from the elegant looking and tall ball conqueror in defensive midfield and the sporting management saw in him a possible key player on the way back to the top English league. However, he did not live up to these expectations. Langley had problems adjusting to the style of play of the "Blues" and at the end of the 1988/89 season he was relegated to the third division with Birmingham City. The following year he and his team just missed the play-off games for possible promotion and he then went back to Wigan Athletic after a total of 76 league games for the club, which played in the third division as in his departure four years earlier. In the four years that followed, Langley accumulated another 157 league games, becoming the record player for Wigan Athletic. In terms of sport, however, his engagement ended disappointingly and after relegation to the fourth division in 1993, he finished his last year in Wigan from fourth from bottom.

He was drawn to the Football Conference in Halifax Town and later to Bangor City in the 1994/95 season . He won the championship at the last-mentioned Welsh club in 1995 , then even sniffed European football again in the UEFA Cup and gained his first coaching experience between October 1996 and his retirement in May 1997. This was followed by further engagements in the top Welsh league for Flint Town United , Rhyl FC and Holywell Town as well as coaching activities for smaller clubs such as Congleton Town , Kidsgrove Athletic and Witton Albion and from July 2011 for Northwich Villa .
