Malia (* 1978 in Malawi ) is a jazz singer.

Live and act

Malia's mother is from Malawi and the father is British. As a teenager, she moved to London from her home country and began to sing. In 2001 she happened to hear a song by the French Liane Foly in New York and was so fascinated that she got in touch with the composer and producer of the song, André Manoukian , and has since released three albums with him. Her debut album Yellow Daffodils , released in 2002, was well received by critics and audiences and brought her her first chart success. In 2004 the second album Echoes of Dreams followed , in 2007 the third album Young Bones . Her fourth album Black Orchid pays homage to Nina Simone .

Malia's style of singing, which is oriented towards cool jazz , successfully flirts with styles from the 1960s and 1970s. Her role models include Billie Holiday , Sarah Vaughan and Nina Simone. In 2003 her video clip for the maxi CD Purple Shoes (Sony BMG) caused quite a stir , in which she strolled through the city singing, wearing only these shoes. In 2004 Malia was nominated nationally / internationally for the German music award Echo in the category Jazz Production of the Year.
