Malmö Mosque, 2006

The Malmö Mosque is one of the most important mosques in Sweden and is located on the outskirts of Malmö in the south of the country. Construction work began in April 1983 and was inaugurated in 1984. Adjacent to the mosque is an Islamic center, which includes an Islamic school and a library. About 55,000 Muslims live in the region.

There have been three arson attacks on the mosque so far; On April 28, 2003, the prayer house was badly damaged in an attack and other buildings of the Islamic Center were completely destroyed. In two further attacks on September 18 and October 21, 2005, the fire was quickly extinguished and only minor damage was caused.

Malmö has a rapidly growing Muslim community , mainly due to immigrants from Iraq . The mosque is visited by Muslims from all over Skåne as well as Muslims from nearby Copenhagen .
