Mama Africa Women's Museum and Art Center

The Mama Africa Women's Museum and Art Center , founded in 2008 by the Gambian artist Isha Fofana , is located in Batokunku in the West African state of Gambia .

Isha Fofana's works of art are exhibited in the context of culturally significant exhibits such as masks , sculptures , musical instruments, cookware, clothing, trousseau and jewelry in order to express the close connection between everyday African culture and art. The aim of the museum is to give women in Africa the recognition they deserve and to make their history tangible for future generations.

The exhibition extends into the garden, which serves as the setting for countless works of art and various events, such as the night of the griots , night of African stories and art courses on painting, carving, batik, pottery and much more. Since 2010 it has been possible for young women in Gambia to attend art classes here in order to earn an income by learning various handicraft techniques. Mama Africa is a non-profit, cultural institution and part of the Women's Museum network .
