Mamady Keïta (* August 1950 in Balandugu , Guinea ; † June 21, 2021 in Brussels , Belgium ) was a Guinean musician, Djembéfola artist and thus a player of the Djembé drum.

biography

Born in a village in Wassolon (province of Siguiri ) near the Fié river , the son of a hunter and fida tigi (master of plants and medicine man) was introduced to the art of Djembé as a child by Karinkadjan Kondé, master drummer in his home village . In 1964, at the age of 14, he was selected to go to the Ballet National Djoliba as the main djemebéfola and soloist . From 1979 to 1986 he was also the artistic director there.

Keïta toured numerous times in Africa, Asia, Europe and the United States.

In 1986 he started working for the Ballet Kotéba by Souleymane Koli in Abidjan and played in the film La Vie Platinée by Claude Cadiou the following year .

In 1988 he moved to Brussels in Belgium and offered courses for the djembé, especially Mandingue rhythms. He led this first in collaboration with the École Répercussions, later with his own school (TamTam Mandingue). In the same year he founded the group Sewa Kan , with whose traditional Mandingue music he toured several times, in 1994 also on his first extensive concert tour to Japan.

In 1990 he organized the first course for percussion and African dances in Guinea in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Guinea and the national ballet Djolibamit Répercussion .

The 1996 album Hamana is dedicated to the Guinean region of the same name. Doundoumba rhythms (a family of rhythms) can be heard on it.

Most recently Keïta lived in Monterrey, Mexico. He died on June 21, 2021 in Brussels, Belgium, after being hospitalized there with a heart condition.
