Mambo (formerly known as Mambo Open Source or MOS) is a free web content management system (WCMS). It is based on the server-side scripting language PHP and the MySQL database . Mambo has not been actively developed since June 2008, so that any security gaps are no longer fixed.
Many users have created modules and components for Mambo, most of which they made available to the user community free of charge. In this way, Mambo offers a considerable range of functions that practically covers all common applications.
Mambo had a large and active following, especially in German-speaking countries. In May 2005, users, companies and publishers came together in Bonn for a congress, the first and penultimate “Mamboday”. But Mambo also had some importance worldwide. B. awarded the LinuxUser & Developer Award 2004.
Help and patches for the relatively high number of errors can be found in many user forums.
requirements
Mambo requires the server-side scripting language PHP and the MySQL database . For problem-free use, web space with the PHP setting "Safe Mode Off" is also recommended. The activated PHP zlib library is required for the installation .
Accessibility
Mambo is not optimized for accessibility in development branch 4.5.x. In the future, public administrations are obliged to make their pages accessible so that Mambo cannot be used there. However, there are a number of developers who have expanded Mambo in such a way that barrier-free use - albeit with a limited range of functions - is possible. Furthermore, there is a derivative of Mambo Version 4.5 with the focus on accessibility with xMambo , see also section Derivatives .
Derivatives
xMambo
xMambo is a spin-off from Mambo (version 4.5) created in 2004 . The main focus of xMambo is compliance with current web standards (XHTML 1.0, CSS, Section 508 / WAI), the renunciation of table-based web design and thus accessibility. In its current version 4.5 r1.0.8, xMambo is not as extensive in terms of functions, design templates and support from the Mambo community as Mambo. It is currently unclear whether and when xMambo will be further developed.
Limbo / LaniusCMS
Limbo was a CMS based on Mambo, but did not require a database application such as B. MySQL , but instead saved the content in text files (a so-called FlatDB). This led to speed advantages for small websites and also made it possible to run on web space offers without MySQL database support. The disadvantage was that it was not possible to create multilingual websites with Limbo.
Limbo is no longer being developed. A fork of the project was called DrakeCMS . In 2008 the project was renamed LaniusCMS and continued to use (and expanded) the feature of a FlatDB (here: GladiusDB and SQLite ). With LaniusCMS it was also possible to create and maintain multilingual websites.
Joomla!
Joomla! is a community project that emerged from Mambo after a dispute over commercial marketing and community participation and is supported by many of the original developers of Mambo.
On August 4, 2005, the company Miro, as the initiator of the Mambo project, founded the “Mambo Foundation”, which the developers should join in the future and which should coordinate and finance the work. A discussion developed in the community as to whether this step had been taken without sufficient involvement from the developer community.
Many of the core developers at Mambo felt that they had been left out and then joined forces in the newly established Open Source Matters Foundation . Since the company Miro had the naming rights to Mambo, was the in OpenSourceMatters a project splitting brought together developers (Engl. Fork ) made and this cleavage under the name Joomla! further developed independently of Mambo.
MiaCMS
MiaCMS is a spin-off from Mambo version 4.6.3. On May 12th, 2008 the first version MiaCMS 4.6.4 was published.
Mambo User Groups (MUGs)
The so-called MUGs are local groups of Mambo users and developers who meet regularly to exchange information about Mambo, to plan projects and of course to get to know each other and thus maintain the social component of open source software.
