Man Shwe or Thura Shwe Mann ( Burmese ရွှေ မန်း or သူ ရ ရွှေ မန်း ; * July 11, 1947 ) is a Myanmar politician and former military . He is a former general, a declared opponent of Myanmar's transition to a “ controlled democracy ” and is considered a confidante of Than Shwe .

Man Shwe was a member of the State Peace and Development Council , the military government that had existed since 1988, and was considered the third strongest man in the state after Than Shwe and Thein Sein until the military government was dissolved in accordance with the new constitution in 2011. From 2011 to 2016 he was speaker of the lower house, elected for the first time in 20 years.

In return for democratic reforms carried out in Burma, on September 19, 2012, the United States lifted the longstanding sanctions against Thein Sein and Thura Shwe Mann. In 2013 Man Shwe became chairman of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party . He had ambitions for the office of president. In August 2015, after an open power struggle with President Thein Sein, he was deposed as party president and replaced by his former deputy, Htay Oo .
