Managarm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Managarm ( old Norse Mánagarmr ; German "moon dog") is a dog from Nordic mythology .

mythology

According to the younger Edda, he is the son of the giantess Angrboda , an old woman who lives in the iron forest. Managarm walks the earth devouring the flesh of the dead while his brother Hati pursues the moon and his brother Skalli the sun. At Ragnarök , the end of the world , Hati sets the moon and Managarm, who has become the largest and strongest of his brood through the corpse flesh, devours him. The blood of the moon splatters and darkens the sun.

According to another tradition, the wolf Hati will devour the moon himself, while Managarm has to watch languidly (as punishment for eating his corpse). Managarm has similarities with the legendary figure of Garm , the dog who guards the Hel underworld .
