Mangalla is a small town in the state of Jubek (until 2015 in Central Equatoria ) in South Sudan .

location

The city is located around 50 kilometers north of Juba on the White Nile . A paved road leads from Juba via Mangalla to Bur . At this point the Nile is flat and wide, with partly reed banks. Navigation is particularly impaired on the section to Juba by drifting water hyacinths and sandbanks.

history

During the civil war in South Sudan in the mid-1980s, Mangalla was in a contested area between government troops and the SPLA , and in the early 1990s, the region mainly fought between opposing factions within the SPLA. After the peace agreement between the government and the South Sudanese rebels in 2005, there were occasional attacks by armed gangs here, as on the other access roads to Juba. In 2006, rebels from the Ugandan LRA were involved in the raids.

population

There are no exact figures about the current population of Mangalla. The majority of the residents in the region are Nuer . Many Bor- Dinka who fled west during the civil war returned after 2005.

economy

Infrastructure, trade and commerce are poorly developed. Planned generous investments in the expansion of the southern Sudanese capital Juba may be signs of a small economic upturn in Mangalla. The land is particularly suitable for growing sugar cane and rice.
