Manhattanization [ manhatani'zi: ʀʊŋ ] (English Manhattanization ) is a neologism that describes the rapid vertical urban growth of a city center. It is a pejorative term used primarily by critics of the skyscrapers in San Francisco during the 1960s and 1970s that blocked the view of the mountains. If an attempt is made to build a district similar to Manhattan in large cities , this is known as Manhattanization. The term Manhattanization continued to refer to the construction bubble in Las Vegas and Miami between 2003 and 2008, which resulted in over 50 skyscrapers in the downtown area.

In connection with the building boom in Santiago de Chile, the term "Sanhattan" was coined. In the Hispanic language area, the term manhattanización was also used for the modernization processes in Madrid.
