A manila tag is a cardboard tag that can be attached to an object to be labeled using string or winding wire. For this purpose, the cardboard card, which is rarely larger than 10 cm × 15 cm, is provided with a hole on one face. The hole is sometimes reinforced with a metal eyelet.

The package tag describes a tag that fulfills the same purpose, but, unlike the Manila tag , does not necessarily have to be made of natural cellulose .

In times when self-adhesive labels were not yet state of the art, this type of inexpensive, fast and flexible labeling of objects was dependent, especially in the commercial handling of goods or piece goods .

The word component Manila leads back to the material originally used, namely inexpensive cardboard made from the pulp of the Manila hemp ( Abacá ). This material, which is still available today, is also easy to print, which makes it easier to apply form components to the label.
