Manila envelope

The Manila envelope is a portrait-format envelope for A4 documents. Traditionally it is beige, but other colors are sometimes used to differentiate categories of the documents it contains. The Manila envelope is usually provided with holes about one centimeter in diameter, so that you can see whether the envelope contains documents.

The Manila component of the name is derived from Manila hemp, a product of the Filipino fiber banana that has been exported to Germany since 1918 . The cardboard for Manila envelopes was originally made from the leaf sheaths of the plant, processed into a fibrous aqueous pulp . This textile banana grows in the Philippines, whose capital Manila hemp was named after.
