Manīžeh in Shāhnāme - Sage XXI -

Manīžeh was a goddess and queen in the Persian Empire , daughter of Afrasiab ( Persian افراسیاب). The Persian poet Firdausi tells of her life in the Shāhnāme , the old Persian book of kings . Manīžeh falls madly in love with Bīžan , the son of Gēv and Bānu Gošasb , the daughter of Rostam . Afrasiab, the father of Manīžeh and King of Turan , goes to war against Iran several times and is u. a. responsible for the death of Shah Nowzar and of the Iranian hero Siyawasch , son of Shah Kai Kawus . When Afrasiab learns of his daughter's secret love for the Iranian Bīžan, he has him arrested and thrown into a well. Manīžeh is thrown out of the palace. She escapes to the well in which Bīžan is being held, digs a tunnel to the well and brings Bīžan food, which she begs for herself and her lover in the nearby town. The Shah of Iran learns of Bīžan's disappearance and sends Rostam to look for him. Rostam frees Bīžan from the well and enables the lovers to escape to Iran.

With the story of Bīžan and Manīžeh, Firdausi has integrated a story of unconditional love and loyalty into his verse epic. The two lovers overcome the enmity of their peoples and remain united even in times of need. Manīžeh, the king's daughter, gives up wealth and a carefree life for her lover, and lives as a beggar in order to be able to take care of her Bīžan, who is trapped in a well. With Manīžeh, Firdausi adds another facet to the image of the woman in the shāhnāme: the self-sacrificing lover.
