The Manly Wade Wellman Award for Science Fiction and Fantasy is an American literary prize that has been awarded to authors from North Carolina since 2014 for works in the field of science fiction and fantasy . The award honors the memory of the author Manly Wade Wellman , who lived in North Carolina for a long time and died in 1986 . The prize is awarded annually by the North Carolina Speculative Fiction Foundation at the ConGregate on the basis of a vote among the participants of the relevant conventions in North Carolina - illogiCon , ConCarolinas , ConTemporal and ConGregate . Nominee works must be prose works by a North Carolina based author of at least 25,000 words that were published in the previous year.
