Mansion House is an underground station on the London Underground in the City of London . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 1 at the intersection of Queen Victoria Street and Cannon Street; it is served by the Circle Line and the District Line . In 2014, 6.20 million passengers used the station. It has three tracks, each with a side and a central platform. On platform 1 the trains run towards Tower Hill and on platform 3 those towards Westminster . Platform 2 is only used by ending and starting trains; until the Circle Line was extended to Hammersmith , each Circle Line train was turned around once a day in Tower Hill or Mansion House to minimize wear on the wheels. The station's name is derived from the nearby Mansion House , the official residence of the Lord Mayor of London , although this building is actually closer to Station Bank .

The station was opened on July 3, 1871 by the Metropolitan District Railway (MDR), the predecessor of today's District Line, when it extended the route from Blackfriars here. The MDR established a connection to the Metropolitan Railway (MR; today's Metropolitan Line ) in South Kensington . MDR and MR jointly built the section to Tower Hill and put it into operation on October 10, 1884. This closed the last gap in the ring line leading around the city center. In the 1920s, a new entrance building was built according to plans by Charles Holden . From October 29, 1989 to February 11, 1991, the station was closed due to extensive renovation and modernization work.
