Cloak boys

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term Manteljünglinge describes a type of representation of the Lower Italian vase painting . Very often young men in coats are shown on the back of the vases. Normal are two or three such persons, who generally show monotonous variants of action. The place where these representations take place is probably marked by the objects shown in the field above the figures, such as jumping weights and writing boards. The former indicate the palaestra as the place of action , the latter a school. Cloak youths are not infrequently crucial in identifying different vase painters.
