Manuel II (Constantinople)

Manuel II ( Middle Greek Μανουήλ Β΄ ; † 1254 ) was Patriarch of Constantinople in exile in Nikaia (1244–1254).

Life

Manuel had been married. He became a protopresbyter in the imperial palace in Nikaia , later Metropolitan of Ephesus . In 1243 he was elected Patriarch of Constantinople after three and a half years of vacancy . In 1244 he took office. Manuel wasn't particularly educated. In 1247 and 1249 he received Franciscans who came on behalf of the Pope. Manuel was a witness in a treaty of Emperor John III in 1254 . Dukas Vatatzes with Michael VIII. Palaiologos .

He died before November 3, 1254, the anniversary of the death of John III.
