Metropolis Ephesus
The metropolitan Ephesus ( Μητρόπολις Εφέσου ) was an Orthodox church province in Asia Minor from 325 to 1923.
history
Ephesus was one of the centers of early Christianity. There were bishops of Ephesus as early as the 1st century. In 325 the metropolitan Ephesus was formed as the first of the metropolises of Asia Minor. In 431 the Council of Ephesus took place in Ephesus . In 451 the Patriarchate of Constantinople was formed, to which the metropolis was incorporated.
In 1923, after the massive exodus of the Greek population from the area, the metropolis was dissolved and converted into a titular bishopric.
A Roman Catholic titular archbishopric of Ephesus had existed as early as 1610 .
