Chrysostomos II. ( Greek Αρχιεπίσκοπος Χρυσόστομος Β΄ ; * 1880 in Aydın ; † June 9, 1968 ), secular name Themistoklis Chatzistavrou ( Θεμιστοκλής Χατζηστ from 1966 to Athens .

Life

Themistoklis was born in Aydin ( Tralleis ) in 1880 . At the age of 17, he and friends tried to take part in the battle of the Greek army against Ottoman rule. He finished high school on Samos and graduated from theological college in Chalkis in 1902 . In the same year he became a deacon . From 1906 he studied law at the University of Lausanne .

He became archdeacon in the metropolitan area of ​​Smyrna. There he took an active part in the liberation struggle in Macedonia . He was sentenced to four years in prison in Salonika for his activities. However, he managed to escape. In 1908 he was able to return after a general amnesty from the Young Turkish rulers. In 1910 he finished his studies in Lausanne.

On December 26, 1910, he became Bishop of Tralleis and Vicar of the Metropolitan of Smyrna. On March 16, 1913, he became Metropolitan of Philadelphia. In the following period he was sentenced to death for his political activities and later pardoned.

On February 19, 1922 he became Metropolitan of Ephesus . In the same year he went to Greece and became Metropolitan of Rhodes on February 5, 1924. On August 30, 1924, he became Metropolitan of Veroia, where he also looked after the numerous Greek refugees from Asia Minor. On October 7th he became the first Metropolitan of Philippi.

In 1961 he chaired the 1st All-Orthodox Assembly of Rhodes. On February 14, 1962 he became Archbishop of Athens and all of Hellas. On May 11, 1967, he was deposed under pressure from the new political leadership in Athens.

He died on June 9, 1968. He is buried in the First Athens Cemetery .
