Manuel de Escandón

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manuel Ignacio de Escandón y Llera , conde (German: Graf) de Sierra Gorda , (* around 1740 , probably in Santiago de Querétaro , Mexico ; † May 21, 1800 in Soto de la Marina , Cantabria , Spain ) officiated as governor of the Mexican Nuevo Santander Province in the Viceroyalty of New Spain .

Life

Manuel de Escandón was born to José de Escandón and his second wife Josefa de Llera y Bayas. Since his father was stationed as an officer in the Querétaro garrison around 1740, this city appears to be the most likely place of birth.

The family followed their father when he was commissioned in 1748 to develop the newly created province of Nuevo Santander with a troop of soldiers and settlers .

When his father died in 1770, Manuel inherited his (acquired in 1751) title of Count of Sierra Gorda . He successfully campaigned with Viceroy Carlos Francisco de Croix for the rehabilitation of his father, who had been accused of abuse of office before his death.

From February 1780 to March 1781 he served for the first time (like his father before him) as governor of Nuevo Santander.

Manuel de Escandón married Anna María de Rojas y Rocha, who died in 1781. Then he is said to have had a love affair with a 22-year-old named Ana Dominga Flores Guerrero.

From July 1790 he took over the governorship of Nuevo Santander again, which he held until his death in May 1800. He died in Spain, his remains were later buried in Laredo, Texas in the family grave of the Escandón family.
