The Manyarweber ( Ploceus manyar ) is a 12 centimeter great representative of the family of weaver birds .
Appearance
These birds have brown-striped plumage. The head of the males is black, except for the yellow cap on the head. The male's beak, underside of wings, and legs are black. The belly is light brown, the chest has several thick, dark stripes. The female has a brown-striped head and an orange beak. The legs are brown.
Distribution and way of life
The Manyar weaver lives in reed belts on rivers in India, Sri Lanka, on the islands of Sumatra, Java and the southern part of Myanmar. They eat grass seeds and insects. During the breeding season, the males are very loud and let out their rough rattling or chirping voice.
Reproduction
During the breeding season, the birds come together to form smaller colonies of up to five animals, mostly near the water, and build community nests out of blades of grass, which the males intertwine. The female lays one or two eggs in the chamber at the end of the nest. After laying eggs, the male leaves his partner again to create further nests, so the male has two to three matings per breeding season.
Subspecies
There are four known subspecies:
- Ploceus manyar flaviceps ( Lesson, RP , 1831) is widespread in Pakistan , India with the exception of the northeast, Sri Lanka, and southeastern Nepal .
- Ploceus manyar peguensis Baker, ECS , 1925 occurs in Bhutan , northeast India and from Bangladesh to northern Laos .
- Ploceus manyar williamsoni Hall, BP , 1957 occurs in Thailand , Cambodia and southern Vietnam .
- Ploceus manyar manyar ( Horsfield , 1821) is widespread on Java and Bali .
Hazards and protective measures
Because of its widespread distribution and that no endangerments are known for this species, the IUCN classifies this species as Least Concern (not endangered).
