Manyikeni

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manyikeni is a ruin site in what is now Mozambique . It is located about 52 km west of Vilanculos , which is on the coast halfway between Inhambane and Beira , and was inhabited from about 1100 to 1600.

The approximately 200 × 200 m large place once belonged to the Munhumutapa empire and shows all the typical features of its cities. In the middle of the place there is a round stone fortress, which certainly represented something like a prince's seat. To the south of it numerous house ruins could be observed. The whole site is littered with potsherds. Glass beads were found, especially within the fortifications, suggesting trade, this is supported by the discovery of sea shells (kauria). An iron gong was also found inside the fortress.

In 1997 it was proposed to raise the place to the status of a world cultural heritage .
